Puerto Vallarta Travel Guide

The city of Puerto Vallarta on the Mexican Pacific coast is a dream destination for your next getaway. Tropical weather, friendly people, and a relaxed beach-town vibe combine to create the best vacation experience for everyone from solo travelers to couples or families.

Our travel guide to Puerto Vallarta will ensure you’re well-prepared for your Mexican adventure.

We found it easy to get around Puerto Vallarta as their public transportation system is reliable.

There are buses, taxis, and even water taxis to get you to all the places of interest. They even have rideshare services like Uber.

If you enjoy biking, you can also rent a scooter or bike. It’s a fun way to see the sights at your own pace.

Traveling to Mexico on your next vacation? You’ll want to check out Puerto Vallarta. This beach resort city is situated on the Pacific Ocean's Bahía de Banderas.

Important Things To Know

Currency

The Mexican peso is the official currency throughout Mexico. But you will be able to use USD at many places geared toward tourists.

National Language

Spanish is the official language spoken in Mexico, but many people are fluent in English in Puerto Vallarta.

We found that most people employed in the tourism industry here speak English. So if your Spanish isn’t up to scratch, you should get by just fine.

Climate And Weather

With a tropical climate and warm weather, year-round Puerto Vallarta is the ideal vacation destination. It’s not quite as hot from December to April, with nighttime temperatures sometimes falling dramatically in January and February.

From June through to October, Puerto Vallarta experiences tropical heat but with some uncomfortable humidity and most of its rainfall.

Puerto Vallarta is on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Therefore, Pacific-based hurricanes are also a reality, notably between August and October.

When To Visit Puerto Vallarta

We found that visiting in the December-to-March period is ideal for whale watching. It’s the high season for tourists, meaning crowds may be more of an issue, but it’s the best time to spot humpback whales. The weather is pleasant but not too hot, and you’ll escape the humid and rainy season.

But your preferred vacation activities will largely dictate when you visit Puerto Vallarta. Many visitors enjoy the May to September period for touring Puerto Vallarta after the Easter vacation crowds have left and when the rates are more affordable.

  • Old Town dining with a view: The Old Town (also known as Zona Romántica) is a major attraction for couples on vacation.  Go for a delicious meal at one of the quaint cafes along this zone’s cobbled streets. Or just enjoy the view from the sail-shaped Los Muertos Beach pier. It replaced the previous wooden pier in 2013 and has become a center for socializing and great food.
  • Lively Farmers’ Markets: We recommend the Saturday Farmers’ Market Co-Op for family-friendly fun. The samples of fresh bread and other farm-fresh bakes will tempt your tastebuds while you peruse the fresh produce, locally-made apparel, and crafts on sale. There are several traditional farmers’ markets here, but this is one of the most popular and our favorite for the relaxed vibe.
