The new year is almost here and it’s time to start thinking about how you can make the next year your best one yet.
Growth requires us to constantly look at ways that we can sharpen our tools, operations and ourselves.
Here are five tips on mistakes that you should avoid in 2025.
Operational
There are many changes ahead in 2025. From REAL ID requirements to new tourist visas in various countries, you want to make sure that you’re on top of things so that your business runs smoothly and your clients are informed.
Stay up to date by visiting websites such as tourism board sites as well as the U.S. Department of State website.
There are also a number of standout resort properties opening as well as major renovations. A number of cruise brands are entering or reentering new regions. You should avoid being the last to know about things in the industry that can and will affect the services you provide.
You want to make sure that you're on top of happenings that will directly affect how you run your business.

Financial
When was the last time that you sat down and reviewed all of your expenses?
Is it possible that you're paying for duplicative systems and/or services? Are you paying for memberships that you don't need or no longer use? Is it time to cut out some services that you can do without?
Avoid paying for unnecessary things that are affecting your bottom line. Set up a meeting with a professional to review and make modifications to your financial responsibilities.
Marketing
Oftentimes our focus is on marketing to our clients and this should be included in your strategy. However, you want to avoid not marketing yourself. What are you doing to position yourself as an expert?
Open yourself up to doing speaking engagements, media contributions, blog writing or other activities that can assist you in marketing yourself. Avoid having imposter syndrome and not giving yourself enough credit.
As you create your marketing plan make sure that you include strategies to increase your visibility in the industry, in your community and amongst your audience. Make sure that all of your documents, email signature, social media bio, etc are updated to reflect you as a professional and an expert.

Client Relationship
Emails are so convenient and have become an integral part of our lives and businesses. However, you should avoid forgetting about the basics.
Consider making more phone calls this year to your clients to deepen your relationships.
Even if the call is only for five minutes, that personal connection will go a long way with your clients. If you need reminders, holidays are always a good time to reach out and connect. These phone calls are also a great opportunity to ask the client for referrals and future bookings.
Personal Development
You've probably taken many courses on resorts and destinations. Nonetheless, we must continue to push ourselves towards further development.
Avoid thinking that basic training is enough and consider gaining higher-level certifications. There are many certifications available such as the ASTA's VTA Certification which is a good choice for new and experienced travel advisors.
Also, remember that there are business certifications outside of the industry as well that could benefit you and your company. Certifications for your business may include women-owned, minority-owned, LGBTQ-owned, Veteran-owned and more. Becoming nationally certified as a business can help to broaden your reach and attract new clients from new areas.
Push yourself to gain at least one new certification in 2025 to help your business expand and to help you grow as a professional.
As we enter 2025, now is the time to start planning for your best year yet. Be mindful and avoid the mistakes mentioned above so that you can set yourself up for success. A new beginning is ahead and you owe it to yourself and your clients to give it your best shot.
Happy Holidays and best wishes for a productive 2025!
