Travel to or through the United Kingdom now requires an extra step for U.S. citizens, Canadians, Australians and non-European travelers.

As of Wednesday, aforementioned visitors must have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for short stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits or short-term study.

The ETA, which is designed to streamline travel while making it more secure, costs £10 or about $13. Keep in mind that there are no refunds after applying.

"ETAs will enhance security through new technology and make the UK border more efficient, preserving the UK’s appeal as a dynamic, diverse, and exciting destination to visit," the UK government stated in late 2024.

Travelers can apply online or using the UK ETA app well before departure with a valid passport, a digital headshot, travel details and a debit or credit card for payment.

Processing time takes about three days but could be shorter or longer depending on the circumstances. That said, travelers shouldn't wait to apply once they have their itinerary in hand.

Once secured, the ETA will be digitally linked to a traveler's passport and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever occurs first. Babies and children also require an ETA, which parents can apply for.

European citizens and visa-exempt travelers will require an ETA to enter or travel through the UK beginning April 2, while British and Irish citizens are excluded from this new requirement.
