If Taiwan has been on your travel radar, 2025 may be the year to visit. The Asian nation recently announced the launch of a new digital nomad visa, which took effect in January and allows foreign digital professionals to stay in Taiwan for up to six months. The new visa program is part of a government focus on attracting digital professionals from around the world, according to Taiwan Today. Taiwan National Development Council (NDC) Minister Liu Chin-ching pointed to a recent report by UK-based consulting firm Global Citizen Solutions that ranks Taiwan first in Asia for digital nomads, adding that the country’s food, living conditions and tourist attractions are all globally recognized. Taiwan’s government plans to invest $4.59 billion in supporting innovative entrepreneurship each year, Liu added, according to Taiwan Today. The island nation is particularly eager to attract digital nomads from neighboring countries like Japan and South Korea. Meanwhile, Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che pointed out that Taiwan was named by CNN Travel as a top 24 destination for 2024, which is yet another potential allure for digital nomads. The island is known for its rich cultural and historical heritage. It’s also a high-tech hub and the location of a digital nomad service center that was established by the NDC and the local government.
This is not Taiwan's first effort to attract more visitors. In 2023, in an effort to reach the country's goal of welcoming six million travelers that year, the government of Taiwan offered the equivalent of $165 to individual tourists and up to $658 to tour groups to visit the island.
