San Miguel de Allende Travel Guide

San Miguel de Allende is a city like no other. The cobblestone streets, Spanish and colonial architecture, delicious food, and international holiday destination status make it one of the most sought-after holiday spots in Mexico.

If you’re planning on taking a trip to this one-of-a-kind place, it’s best to know as much as you can before going. Use this San Miquel de Allende travel guide to learn more about this eclectic Mexican city.

There are four main ways to get around San Miquel de Allende:

  • Car: We only recommend renting a car for excursions beyond the city. In the city, which has narrow and steep roads, a car and limited parking are a massive hassle.
  • Taxi: If you want to get around the city, we recommend taking a taxi. Make sure to check the taxi rates before committing to a driver and prepare to tip.
  • Bike: The fastest way to get the city around is on a bike. It’s much easier to navigate the streets on a bike and there are rental shops for easy and affordable bike options.
  • Foot: For us, the best way to get around the city was on foot. It skips past all the narrow traffic and is often faster than driving. It’s also a great opportunity to take in the local architecture and find unique spots.

Important Things To Know

Currency

San Miquel de Allende is a Mexican city and uses the Mexican peso. The peso is recognized with the $ and MEX$ symbols.

There are both banknotes and coins of the Mexican peso. They come in the following denominations:

  • Banknotes: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, $1000.
  • Coins: 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20.

While you can buy with USD at most tourist spots, we’d recommend using the peso instead. The exchange rate on USD purchases in San Miquel de Allende can be expensive.

National Languages

San Miguel de Allende locals are mostly Spanish-speaking individuals. Luckily, the majority of people are multilingual and many speak English.

We also noticed a large population of international students and employees. It made getting around with almost no Spanish knowledge quite easy.

Of course, you might not always have an English speaker available. For that, we suggest downloading a translation app or learning a few Spanish phrases.

Climate And Weather

San Miguel de Allende is fairly warm throughout the year with moderate temperatures.

The winter season is from December to February. The days are cool and clear, with the cold only really making itself known at night.

Summer, which is from June to August, is warm and overcast. This is also the wet season, with high humidity and afternoon showers.
