European Waterways, a premier provider of luxury hotel barge cruises, has expanded its fleet with the official addition of Shannon Princess, Ireland’s only luxury hotel barge. This strategic acquisition underscores the company’s commitment to delivering bespoke cruising experiences and solidifies its position as a leader in the luxury barging industry.
A Beloved Vessel’s New Chapter
Operating on the River Shannon since 2003, Shannon Princess has been skillfully owned and operated by Ruairi and Olivia Gibbons, earning a reputation as one of Ireland’s most sought-after travel experiences. Now, under European Waterways’ full ownership, the barge will retain its popular Emerald Isle itinerary while undergoing enhancements to further elevate its offerings.
Shannon Princess welcomes up to 10 passengers at a time, accommodating them in capacious en suite cabins, and boasts a panoramic saloon, a spacious sun deck with a spa pool and a crew of five who are dedicated to providing impeccable service. Due to strong demand, European Waterways plans to extend the Shannon Princess cruising season in 2025 and beyond, supported by its expert UK-based Sales and Reservations team.
“We are thrilled to welcome Shannon Princess to the European Waterways family,” said Derek Banks, Managing Director of European Waterways. “Her charm and character align perfectly with our commitment to luxury and cultural immersion. This acquisition further enhances our ability to offer our guests unforgettable journeys through Ireland’s stunning landscapes and historic waterways.”
Exploring Ireland’s Rich Heritage
The Shannon Princess will continue to showcase the best of Ireland’s natural beauty, including vast verdant landscapes and charming villages, and its rich history as she navigates the River Shannon. The river cruise features a curated itinerary, complete with private whiskey tastings, guided tours of ancient castles, and opportunities for walking and fishing along the route. Onboard, guests can enjoy unique “Insider Experiences”, including live traditional Irish music, cooking demonstrations and exclusive visits to stately homes.
In line with European Waterways’ branding, the Shannon Princess will adopt the company’s signature blue, yellow and red livery before the start of the 2025 season. Future plans may include updates to the vessel’s interiors, expanded excursion opportunities, and bespoke onboard experiences, ensuring guests enjoy an unparalleled level of luxury and cultural immersion, complete with Ireland’s exceptional brand of hospitality.
As the demand for slow and immersive luxury travel continues to expand, European Waterways continues to operate at the forefront of the hotel barge segment, offering uniquely curated experiences that blend the heritage and history of Europe’s distinctive river with and modern comforts. With a fleet of 18 vessels traversing some of the Continent’s most picturesque waterways, the company is dedicated to preserving the timeless appeal of slow travel while elevating its offerings to meet the evolving tastes of discerning travelers.
