Bolivia Travel Guide

In central South America lies an underrated gem of majestic mountains, unique landscapes, rich heritage, and untapped adventure.

With the Andes, the Amazon, and the Atacama Desert, Bolivia has an incredible range of natural wonders to explore.

To get between cities in Bolivia, the most popular mode of transport for tourists is domestic plane travel. This is a quick way to get from one place to another, and it is fairly affordable.

If you want a more budget-friendly option, buses are a common way to get around. The journeys might be long, but there is a wide range of routes. Train travel is also an option for certain trips, but the rail network in Bolivia is not very big.

Within cities, we found that buses are the most common form of public transport. You can also get around on foot - we recommend this if you want to see and experience all parts of the cities.

If you want an easy and efficient way to see all the sights that Bolivia has to offer, you can book a tour service that includes transport.

The most popular time for tourists to visit Bolivia is during the winter, due to it being the dry season. This allows you to get around without the hassle of rain, but keep in mind that temperatures can dip so pack accordingly.

The shoulder seasons (autumn and spring) are also ideal, as the weather is moderate and there is far less chance of rain. These are also quieter seasons, so you can avoid crowds.

  • Sucre: The constitutional capital of the country, Sucre is a hub of activity in Bolivia that houses must-see museums, beautiful colonial buildings, and vibrant markets. Our favorite sights include Freedom House, Plaza 25 de Mayo, and Museo de Arte Indigena.
  • Salar de Uyuni: If you want to see something extraordinary, then you cannot miss the world’s largest salt flat: Salar de Uyuni. Located near the Andes, the salt flat is almost 11,000-sq.-km big and is a result of evaporated lakes. Seeing it after rainfall is quite spectacular, as the entire flat takes on a reflective effect and becomes a giant mirror.
  • Tiwanaku: To discover the ancient Tiwanaku culture, you can spend hours exploring the ruins of the city of Tiwanaku. Here you can see temples, arches, stone monoliths, and more. Our top pick is the Akapana Pyramid and its surroundings.
