If you've ever dreamed of visiting Machu Picchu—one of the seven wonders of the world—you've probably heard about the breathtaking views, ancient history, and, let's be real, the steep costs of getting there. But don't worry! While this iconic journey can feel like a splurge, there are ways to experience it without completely emptying your wallet.

Option 1: The Scenic (But Long) Route

If you love a good scenic journey and don't mind taking your sweet time, this one's for you.

  1. Fly to Lima: No American airlines fly directly to Cusco, so you'll first need to land in Lima. From there, snag a round-trip flight to Cusco for $70–$125. You might get it cheaper if you book far enough in advance (and with a little luck).
  2. Bus to Hydroelectric Train Station: Once you've soaked in the high-altitude vibes of Cusco, hop on an 8-hour bus to the Hydroelectric Train Station. Depending on the season, this will cost you about $25–$30 round trip. Pro tip: bring snacks and download a playlist—it's a ride.
  3. Train to Aguas Calientes: Next, take a 20-minute train ride from the Hydroelectric Station to Aguas Calientes (aka Machu Picchu Town).
  4. Bus to Machu Picchu: Finally, you'll board a 25-minute bus ride to the entrance of Machu Picchu. This round-trip will set you back $24.
  5. Tickets and Tours: Secure your entry ticket online ahead of time—$62 for Circuit 2, the most popular route. Guides are optional, but if you're feeling fancy, negotiate with one on-site waiting for the bus in Machu Picchu town for $60–$70.

Cost Breakdown:

  1. Flight: $70–$125
  2. Bus: $25–$30
  3. Train: ~$10
  4. Machu Picchu bus: $24
  5. Entrance: $62
  6. Tour guide: $60–$70 (optional)

Total: $241–$311 (depending on your guide and season)

Option 2: Tour Companies to the Rescue

Not into planning every little detail? A tour company might be your vibe.

Here's how it works:

  1. A tour company will handle everything for you, including your 4-hour bus ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo (leaving at an ungodly 4:45 AM). From there, you'll hop on a train to Aguas Calientes, where a guide will meet you with tickets and instructions.
  2. After your 25-minute bus ride to Machu Picchu, you'll explore the site for 2–2.5 hours with your guide.
  3. Post-tour, your guide will take you back to town, where you'll enjoy lunch before returning to Cusco via train and bus.

Cost Breakdown:

Most tour companies charge $340–$400 for this all-inclusive package. While it's pricier, it saves you time and effort, making it a great option if you prefer convenience over penny-pinching.

Option 3: DIY Like a Pro

If you love flexibility and saving cash, this option is for you and my favorite option.

  1. Round-Trip Transportation: Book your train and bus ride from Cusco on PeruRail ($66) or IncaRail ($61). The 4.5-hour journey is faster and more comfortable than the bus-only route. Early birds can save even more by snagging a 3:20 AM or 4:20 AM departure.
  2. Machu Picchu Bus: Once you're in Aguas Calientes, purchase your 25-minute round-trip bus ticket for $24.
  3. Entrance Tickets: Buy your Machu Picchu entry online for $62, ensuring you pick the right time slot (entry is staggered by the hour).
  4. Optional Guide: On-site guides charge around $60–$70, so you can negotiate your way to a personalized tour.

Cost Breakdown:

  1. Bus + train: $61–$66
  2. Machu Picchu bus: $24
  3. Entrance: $62
  4. Tour guide: $60–$70 (optional)

Total: $147–$207

This DIY option is the shortest and most cost-efficient way to visit Machu Picchu. Plus, you'll have the freedom to tailor the experience to your preferences.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're a scenic adventurer, a fan of all-inclusive tours, or a DIY traveler, there's an affordable way to explore Machu Picchu. Each route has its own perks, so pick what works best for your budget and schedule.

Ready to plan your journey? Start packing your hiking boots, and let Machu Picchu amaze you—without breaking the bank! What kind of traveler are you?
