Alaska Airlines will become the only airline to offer a nonstop route between San Diego International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, a route which was just approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation on Tuesday, December 17.
The new route will be available to purchase on the airline’s website soon. The airline did not release when the new route will begin operating.
Alaska Airlines has been flying from San Diego for the past 40 years and offers the most nonstop destinations from San Diego, offering 40 nonstop destinations. The airline also provides nonstop service to Washington, D.C. from Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
“We are pleased the DOT sees the value of Alaska providing direct service between San Diego and DCA, and we thank the many leaders, local businesses and organizations who supported our bid,” said Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci. “This new route reflects our commitment to San Diego, home of the nation’s largest military community, and offers our guests a seamless travel option to our nation’s capital.”
The news about the latest new nonstop route comes just a week or so after the merged Alaska Airlines-Hawaiian Airlines company, called Alaska Air Group, announced its combined growth plan, called Alaska Accelerate, which will add more lounges in more airports across the country, increase premium travel options, expand routes and more.
