La Paz, Mexico, is known for its beauty and tranquility and is an ideal destination for those looking to unwind and relax. It is also a place of adventure and if you are looking to get out and explore when you visit, here are some of the area's top adventures travelers can take advantage of while there.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Stand-up paddle boarding or SUP has been growing in popularity. It's a great adventure that is open to just about anyone. Tamer than surfing but equally as fun and surprisingly rigorous.

The bay of La Paz is an amazing place to practice this outdoor activity as it is almost like a pool, with few waves. There are two main places to do it: the Malecon (boardwalk) with nice views of the downtown of La Paz and Balandra’s mangrove lagoon.

Sandboarding

Sandboarding is similar to snowboarding--with a small difference, it takes place on sand dunes, no snow required. Not many people know that sandboarding is an option in La Paz, but 20 minutes north of La Paz is El Mogote, a natural sand barrier and one of the best spots to practice sandboarding in Mexico.

Surfing of All Kinds

La Paz is a Mecca for surfing of all types. Todos Santos is a favorite spot for many people to learn or improve their surfing skills. There are several schools around Playa Cerritos that offer lessons and plenty of places to rent a board.

Kite surfing is another popular Watersport. All it takes is a little bit of wind, which makes the bay of La Ventana and El Sargento the perfect spots for this activity. Several schools provide instruction for beginners and advanced kite surfers.

Windsurfing is another adventure that is easily accessible in La Paz. The bay is well-known around the world by windsurfers as a favorite spot for lovers of extreme sports.

Hiking

La Paz is home to more than 60 miles of hiking trails well-suited for beginners and advanced trekkers alike. Visitors can join guided hikes through varying terrain around the Sierra while learning about the more than 700 species of flora and fauna in the area as well as about the history of Baja California Sur and its ranch culture.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is gaining a foothold in the region. The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) started training the area's local crew in late 2014. Under guidance from IMBA experts Shane Wilson and Mark McClure, the local staff built the 9.1-kilometer Santa Rosa mountain biking trail in about 18 months. Since then, the crew has completed intensive IMBA Trail Solutions training that allows them to design, build and maintain additional trails.

Using these professional skills, Rancho Cacachilas is working towards creating more than 50 kilometers of IMBA standard, single-track private trails and becoming an official IMBA Ride Center.
